How to do a pie plot with Pandas using Python

1 min

Pie plots are dope. They are especially good to show some categorical variables counts.

Let's get straight to an example to illustrate.

Here is a super simple example of a pie plot, using the Pandas library.

import pandas as pd

# We create our sample dataframe
df = pd.DataFrame(data={"country" : ["Spain", "Germany", "USA"], "population": [47.30e9, 83.24e9, 329.5e9 ]})

df.plot(kind="pie", y="population", labels=df["country"])

As we can see we are using the DataFrame.plot() method and passing a kind="pie" argument along with the y and the labels.

In this example, we are plotting the population per country.

Here is the result.
